Rétromobile 2019 proved once again its the leader of the European pack as numbers reflected an impressive turn out, but can the auctions stand up and be counted?
Bursting catelogues and glittering lot-lists are essential and have a lot to deliver on the big stage, especially when the target audience is eager to part with some well earned cash.
It seems local boys, Artcurial Motorcars once again dominated the annual week of collectors’ car sales in Paris, which took place over a hectic three days 8 – 10 February.
Boasting sales 31%+ on the previous year and 10 record auction transactions, the French outfit had most things in their favour, including having the best seat in the house.
Matthieu Lamoure, Managing director, Artcurial:

Most Expensive Ever Pre-War Car
The jewel in the crown was an incredible 1939 Alfa Romeo 8C 2900 B Touring Berlinetta that eventually changed hands for a whopping 17M€ / 19M$ including premium, making it the third most expensive pre-war car ever to sell at auction.
The family owned classic giant has been cherished by the owners for the last 43 years, but will now travel to pastures new after being sold to a private collecting US bidder.
Although less fortunate, Bonhams did manage to sell 93 cars and acheive a sell rate of 66%. The Union Jack may have to rethink its vintage catalogue strategy if improvements are to mirror big boys, RM.
