The lovable Alpine A110 has fought off some rigorous competition winning Top Gear magazine’s ‘Performance Car of the Year 2018’ title.
Stiff opposition came from 13 other sporting classics, but the legendary Alpine 110 was victorious following a thrashing from a group of enthusiastic Top Gear journalists, who gave all of the cars some harsh testing at the legendary Circuit de Charade in Saint-Genès-Champanelle near Clermont-Ferrand, France
Not happy with only testing the Alpine A110 on the racing circuit, Top Gear drove the model 400 miles through its home country of France before arriving at Circuit de Charade for the annual Speed Week comparison test.
At Charade it faced up to a diverse range of performance cars including the Bugatti Chiron, Ferrari 488 Pista, Porsche 911 GT2 RS and the McLaren 600LT.
At the conclusion of the test TopGear said of the A110:
“It’s a car with wonderful poise and balance, a deft touch and a loose, limber energy. It is pure driving, and it’s our Performance Car of the Year 2018.”
When designing the Alpine A110, the focus of the engineers was as much on driver comfort as out-and-out performance, ensuring the car was able to cope with everything the Top Gear journalists asked of it.
A lightweight model, tipping the scales at just 1,080kg, combined with double wishbone suspension and a turbocharged 1.8-litre four cylinder engine that has an output of 248 bhp, means the Alpine A110 is engineered to meet its brief and provides driving pleasure in all circumstances.
At launch the A110 was available in the Première Edition trim. All 1,955 examples sold out within five days. The A110 is now available in Pure and Légende trims.
The A110 Pure is focused on the connection between driver and machine and has a minimalist approach. Lightweight, it has 13.1kg Sabelt monocoque seats and 17-inch light alloy wheels. Leather and microfibre seat upholstery combined with a matte carbon fibre interior trim, to hint at Pure’s sporting intent.

Displaying the character of a GT, the A110 Légende is the more sophisticated and refined edition of the A110. Its distinguishing features include six-way adjustable seats in black or brown leather and a lightweight Focal audio system that’s optimised to the A110’s cabin.
