A fully restored glorious 1936 Bentley 4 -1/4 Litre Saloon carrying saloon coachwork by Joseph Cockshoot & Co Ltd of Manchester will go under the gavel at Worldwide Auctioneers Pacific Grove Sale 15th August 2019.
Cockshoot carriage and ‘gentleman’s sports car’, the glorious Derby Bentley followed a stealth-like Rolls-Royce takeover in 1931 and began a new chapter for the British marque albeit under a different guise.
Leaving the Bentley factory with chassis, radiator and bonnet, Derby Bentley 4/14 vehicles boasted some of the finest coachwork of the day and to this day still command respected attention and scrutiny wherever they venture.
A custom body could be ordered from Park Ward, Thrupp & Mayberly, Rippon, Barker, Freestone & Webb, Hooper, as well as a number of other reputable coachbuilders of the day. Indeed the Bentley’s Silent Sportscar was and still is a thing of outstanding beauty.
Fully restored to its former glory and elegance, the coachwork by J. Cockshoot of Manchester raises the desirability stakes of the Bentley 4 -1/4 Litre Saloon to an even higher level. Cockshoots rapidly gained a reputation for high-quality craftsmanship and were immediately recognized by high society and royalty with kings and queens being transported in style to their coronations and weddings in a carriage that carried the company’s illustrious coachwork.
This particular Derby Bentley clearly demonstrates Cockshoot’s elegant and timeless design with its tastefully lowered body-line. Dazzling chrome work, large twin Lucas headlamps, single driving light and twin horns stand proudly to the head of the instantly recognisable rounded Bentley grille.
A two-tone overcoat of silver and burgundy complement the exquisite and rather minimalistic bumpers, with doors being centre-hinged, and trunk area housing spare tyre complete with a hard-shell cover with the Bentley logo proudly displayed.
The Bentley interior is beautifully upholstered in fine ivory coloured leather with matching door panels and light tan carpeting. As one would expect, the dashboard is finished in the finest burled walnut with a finish that matches that of the best furniture. Instrumentation includes chromed switches, dials and vintage clocks that give the tactile dashboard an opulent feel.
Power is supplied from its robust 4.25-litre inline-six with twin SU carburettors in the spacious and immaculate engine compartment. Whitewall tyres work in perfect synergy with the anthracite grey wired rims, highlighting a stylish contrast between both.
This Bentley rides on wide whitewall tyres that are mounted on wire rims that are painted in a light grey for a nice contrast.
Previously owned by prominent Pebble Beach collectors, recently fully serviced and inspected by Antique Auto Restoration, in Sand City, California in July of 2019. A car that is so exclusive Joseph Cockshoot & Co built just 16 bodies making this an extremely rare motor car.
