What you’re looking at here is what’s thought to be the earliest known Aston Martin 2 Litre Sports DB1 and best of all, it’s up for sale…

While its Triumph Mayflower front end similarities and Allard likeness might steer the more youthful Aston fan in the opposite direction, this particular and rather beautiful 1948 2 litre Sports, also known by its unofficial name ‘DB1’ (David Brown), has all the qualities any ‘well-heeled’ racer would dream of when out and about.

Styling and design came from automotive stylist Frank Feeley, who had already been heavily involved with the elegant and seductive Lagonda V12 just a few years previously. The new streamlined and attractive design was truly a fashion statement for the late ’40s. Praised by Motor Sport magazine in November 1948, the 2 Litre Sports became an exclusive and fast-paced Gran Turismo suitable for those gentlemen who had a distinguished sporting character.

Debuting at the 1948 London Motor Show, it’s reported only 15 examples were ever produced with only 9 extant. Chassis AMC/48/3 is described as being the earliest known surviving example of the original 15 vehicles built during 1948 and 1950.

The car was first delivered to the Duke of Hamilton in 1949 in a unique shade of dark blue/grey with a tan interior and featured a pushrod 2.0-litre straight-four engine, coil springs all-around, torsion bar at the front and even had Girling brakes.

It was retained by the Family for a number of years before being sold to a number of collectors before being bought by the current custodian some years ago and fully restored by ‘the very best Aston specialists‘.

Chassis AMC/48/3 changed its appearance and was repainted to classic British Green at one point in its life, but during restoration, was then returned to its original colour. The car is reported as being used sparingly and never publicly exhibited… a hidden gem of Aston Martin’s modern post-war history.
