A 1973 Escort RS1600 built to Group 4 Rally specification and in concours condition will be offered at a forthcoming classic car sale with an estimate of £100,000.
The MK1 Ford Escort was first introduced at the Brussels Motor Show in January 1968 and was instantly a commercial success for the marque, who were already using their existing Motorsport involvement as a means to generate sales leads.
This ‘new’ Escort was to prove successful at every level with the Ford works team seemingly unbeatable in the late 60s’ and early 70s’.
It’s greatest success came in 1970, where Finnish superstar, Hannu Mikkola, was the victorious pilot in the London to Mexico World Cup Rally.
The RS1600 was the next step up from the illustrious Mexico and developed using an engine that was essentially a detuned Formula 3 unit designated BDA (Belt Drive A Series).
This particular Olympic Blue RS1600 has been restored with a high level of scrutiny, retaining 90% of its original panels which include floors, seals and inner wings
