A 1973 Escort RS1600 built to Group 4 Rally specification and in concours condition will be offered at a forthcoming classic car sale with an estimate of £100,000.

The MK1 Ford Escort was first introduced at the Brussels Motor Show in January 1968 and was instantly a commercial success for the marque, who were already using their existing Motorsport involvement as a means to generate sales leads.

This ‘new’ Escort was to prove successful at every level with the Ford works team seemingly unbeatable in the late 60s’ and early 70s’.

It’s greatest success came in 1970, where Finnish superstar, Hannu Mikkola, was the victorious pilot in the London to Mexico World Cup Rally.

The RS1600 was the next step up from the illustrious Mexico and developed using an engine that was essentially a detuned Formula 3 unit designated BDA (Belt Drive A Series).

This particular Olympic Blue RS1600 has been restored with a high level of scrutiny, retaining 90% of its original panels which include floors, seals and inner wings

Group 4 fabrication parts are mainly Gartrac, a world renowned motorsport fabrication company with 45+ years’ of knowledge and expertise in manufacturing.

The car is currently set up for tarmac but is quite capable of being set up for forestry events as all mountings are in place.

Engine: 2.0 BDG T Block, supplied & built by Wayne Mitchell to historic specifications.

Gearbox: ZF 5 speed, correct historic specification, Pro Gear Kit direct top supplied by Rix.

Alloy Fuel & oil tank are both mounted in the boot: Luminition ignition system, Engine coolant Copper brass radiator, large header tank with spal radiator fan. The engine is producing 242bhp at 8000rpm, 0 mileage on the engine.

Clutch: Ap Racing twin plate. Master cylinder & Slave cylinder genuine Girling items.

Suspension: Bilstein GP4 rally tarmac specification. Fully adjustable rose jointed TCAs and compression struts.

Rear Axle: GP4 Fully Floating Atlas rear axle 5.1 Ratio LSD, 5 Linked (Squires) Supplied by Evans and Son rally spares.

Cooling System: Oil cooling system Mocal with remote oil filter.

Front brakes: AP Racing Montecarlo callipers and Ap Racing Vented discs, fitted to Ally Big Bearing Hubs and Bells.

Rear brakes: Ap racing 2577 Callipers with solid discs and hand brake mechanism. Ferrodo racing pads front and rear. Fully Aeroquip Braided brake lines running through the car.

Wheels & Tyres: 8J Revolution mini-light style GP4 Fitment wrapped in Toyo R888 tyres x5.

Interior: Safety Devices 6 Point bolt in Roll cage with x brace door bars and dash bar.

Corbeau Pro Series X Racing seats with Corbeau 6 point harnesses and Mountings. Life Line 2000 electric fire extinguisher system with Lifeline handhelds.

Hydraulic handbrake. Gartrac biased pedal box. Cartec electric master cut out system with a manual key.

Bespoke wiring loom aircraft grade and fully labelled at all connections. Alloy Navigators footplate. Upper and lower spot lamp connections are fitted. Halder type trip meter. Racetech Gauges. Heated front and rear screen.

All new rubber sills including lights and handles throughout the car with a brand-new headlining.
