Fast Fords Hit Top Gear At Silverstone Race Retro Auction

Fast Fords hit top gear at the Race Retro Classic Car Sale, which took place at the Race Retro International Historic Motorsport Show 2018, Stoneleigh.

Bidding was lively at the recent Race Retro Classic Car Sale, with over 70 stunning cars going under hammer, including a 1969 Dodge Charger previously owned by global movie star Bruce Willis as a gift from his first wife Demi Moore and now owned by Jamiroquai frontman Jay Kay. The ‘Bullitt’ spec stunner was sold for £94,500.

The music world was also represented by Sir Elton John CBE. A rare, hand-built 1997 Aston Martin V8 Vantage V550 was ordered new by one of the biggest music stars on the planet. This beast had fewer than 10,000 miles on the clock, eventually selling for a whopping £219,375.

Fast Fords

No auction is complete without those ever popular fast Fords, which amongst others came in the shape of a 1987 Ford RS200, 1987 Ford Capri 280 ‘Brooklands’, 1980 Ford Escort RS2000 Mk2, 1973 Ford Escort Mk1 Mexico, 1974 Ford Escort Mk1 RS2000, 1986 Ford Sierra RS Cosworth and legendary 1996 Ford Escort RS Cosworth.

Ford RS200

Styled by Ghia with bodywork trusted to fibreglass specialists Reliant, this Ford RS200 reflects just 8,876 miles on the odometer. This rare car even had the original leather bound RS200 driver’s manual. A collectors bidding frenzy saw the right hand drive beauty reap £157,500 before the hammer finally dropped.

1987 Ford Capri 280 ‘Brooklands’

Always a head turner, the Capri 280 was the final limited edition run of the legendary Ford Coupé which had first appeared back in 1969. Ford originally intended to make 500 turbo-charged vehicles (by Turbo Technics) complete with gold alloy wheels but a change of production planning meant a name change to Capri 280.

This outstanding example showed a frugal 12,800 miles on it’s under-used odometer, awakening from storage slumber accompanied by a superb history file detailing its ownership back to the 1980s when the car was laid up as a result of an injury to its owner at the time. Final bids terminated at a very respectable £34,500.

1974 Ford Escort Mk1 RS2000

Another classic Ford magnet, the Ford Escort Mk1 Mexico followed up on the RS1600 of 1970, which was quite a specialist car that demanded a lot of care and attention. Then came the all dancing Mexico and RS2000 which were far more suited to the man in the street. June 1973 saw the Mexico overthrown by the RS2000.

This 1974 UK-market RS2000 in Olympic Blue, was manufactured in August 1974 and still bears its original registration HWV 447N. Final price at the Race Retro Sale was £37,125.

1996 Ford Escort RS Cosworth

Last but certainly not least was this 1996 Ford Escort RS Cosworth. Successor to it’s Sierra namesake, similar to the Lancia Integrale and Subaru Imprezathe, this ‘Group A’ rally car is the peoples choice for ripping tarmac from the British highways.

Packed with historic paperwork, this Imperial Blue Metallic example covered only 29,000 miles with three former keepers, which echoed the winners bid of £58,500.
