Festival of the Unexceptional - Grimsthorpe Castle

Following the announcement that the new venue for the spectacular Festival of the Unexceptional Concours de l’Ordinaire would be Grimsthorpe Castle in Lincolnshire, interest has been fast and furious. The 2020 Festival of the Unexceptional was relocated due to an increased demand for larger show space.

The light-hearted event has now been recognised as one of ‘the‘ shows to attend on the classic calendar, welcoming the ‘unexceptional’ as a term of endearment rather than a derogatory dig.

The first Festival of the Unexceptional offered a truly relaxed atmosphere within the classic car calendar and ensured the car remained firmly as the star. Festival is friendly, open, inclusive, relaxed and fun. As such, entry for show cars is free, 1000 show tickets are also offered free of charge with the remaining tickets sold at a low price all helping to create an event for the many rather than for the chosen few.

What Is Unexceptional?

What does it mean to be unexceptional? It is a car once seen with alarming regularity, a staple sight on UK streets and motorways, a car that mum or dad may have owned and is often a car you may not have given a second glance in period. It is not a limited production rarity, or a car widely admired and cherished, rather it is a car that was once mainstream and yet forgettable enough to be allowed to fall into near extinction without many mourning its loss.

Think Datsun Cherry, Vauxhall Chevette, Yugo 45, Skoda Estelle, Renault 4 and Honda Ballade. When did you last see one? Many think a new Italian supercar provides exclusivity on UK roads when, in fact, a 1986 Cavalier 1.6L is rarer.

Hagerty Managing Director Marcus Atkinson:
“When we first created the Festival its sole aim was to celebrate the unsung heroes of the road. 7 years later and that ethos remains the same, despite the show now being much bigger. Now Festival is established, we want to slow the loss of unexceptional cars on UK roads through raised awareness of their decreasing numbers. Not only will this save many wonderful cars from extinction, but it will also create a new genre of classic car in the process.”

“Hagerty UK provides an all-inclusive service to all car enthusiasts whether you have a world-class car collection or drive a more mundane classic, the same passion runs through us all and it’s our aim to entertain owners through our events and impress them with our levels of professional service should they choose to insure with us. Festival of the Unexceptional is unique, and we welcome enthusiasts from around the world to come and celebrate with us later this year.”
