Jamiroquai singer Jay Kay is having a seasonal clear-out, parting with his incredibly rare 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7-Litre ‘Lightweight’ Coupé.
Renowned for his large collection of cars, the English singer-songwriter has decided to part company from the brightly coloured Porsche, offering it at Bonhams Bond Street Sale in December. Estimated at £750,000 – 850,000 ($950,000 – 1,100,000), the 911 Carrera RS 2.7-Litre ‘Lightweight’ Coupé is one of only 200 examples ever built.
Distinctive ‘ducktail’ spoiler and a body shell produced from steel only 0.7mm thick, rather than the standard 1.0mm production material, the competition lightweight model boasted aluminium front subframe and even super-thin side and rear window glazing from Belgian firm Glaverbel.
Front and rear openings were manufactured using balsa-reinforced fibreglass, as were front and rear bumpers, with the front providing access to a centrally mounted auxiliary oil radiator. The rear arches were widened to accommodate 7-inch-wide Fuchs alloy rims.
The quest for producing something resembling a competitive feather on spinach was taken a step further by removing body insulation and any unnecessary hardware, including the rear seating area, reclining front seats, clock, armrests, door handles and even sun visor from the passenger side. The complete space and weight saving extremities brought the unit down to a spritely 2,150 pounds (975 kilograms).
Former factory driver Jürgen Barth:
“The Carrera RS 2.7 is the basis for Porsche motorsport in the 1970s.”
