The gull-winged Electric Drive has just been listed for sale but was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show back in 2012 with deliveries due to begin in 2013 with around 100 examples to be produced. High prices and demand for a slick EV meant that in reality, only nine would ever roll off the production line.
Ahead of its competitors and powered by four electric motors at each corner delivering 750 PS (740 bhp) and 1,000 NM of torque, this was a radical machine that embraced a seamless four-wheel drive experience at a time when companies such as Tesla were still in development.
Fully charged, the car’s 60-kWh lithium-ion battery pack could reach 155 miles which may seem insignificant to Tesla Model S Long Range 279 miler but was outstanding then. At the time of its introduction, this was also the world’s fastest electrically-powered series production vehicle, including the most powerful Mercedes-Benz ever built.
This SLS AMG Electric Drive can hit break-neck speeds of 0-100 km/h in just 3.9 seconds, an incredible achievement, especially when considering that it weighs some 560 kg more than the standard SLS AMG.
The car was originally delivered new to Switzerland and currently resides in the Netherlands with less than 3,800 km on its odometer, showing that it can be driven, albeit very carefully, on the street and enjoyed as the manufacturers intended.
