Porsche is reviving its historic colours so you can now order that gleaming 911 in Rubystar Red or Mint Green instead of the usual boring grey…

Remember the good old days when Porsche dressed their sports cars in colourful overcoats? Well, the focus is now on cult-classic and vibrance as the German marque revives their historic colours for all Porsche models.

In a bid to make the brand ‘pop’ once again, Porsche has updated its custom colour options, renaming it ‘Paint to Sample’ and ‘Paint to Sample Plus‘. The new colour-mixing bench has been put into operation at the manufacturing plant in Zuffenhausen, where paint specialists blend several dozen ingredients down to the last milligram in order to achieve the desired shade.

Classic Porsche colours…

Alexander Fabig, Head of Individualisation and Classic:
“Unusual paint finishes have been familiar throughout the history of our brand and are an important differentiating feature. With this offer, we are reviving cult-classic colours and expanding the extensive range of standard and special colours across all the model series by more than 160 shades.”

Following years of just about everything from cars to kitchens being either light or dark grey, the comeback of historic colours has gathered momentum with automakers now recognising a lucrative gap in the market for bespoke paintwork.

Porsche is not only expanding its colour range but also restructuring it with its Custom Colour being renamed ‘Paint to Sample‘. This category includes predefined colours that have already been technically and historically approved by Porsche’s paint specialists.

Examples include Maritime Blue, Rubystar and Mint Green. These colourful choices from the 1990s enjoy cult status among Porsche fans. In the past, they were offered on the 911 (Type 964). As part of Porsche’s enhanced individualisation strategy, the legendary paint shades are now celebrating a comeback.

For especially individual colour requests, Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur goes a step further with ‘Paint to Sample Plus‘ the paint finish can be chosen almost entirely freely. This option is available for the model lines 911, 718 and Taycan.
