A rare 1959 BMW 507 Series II Roadster sold new to HRH Prince Constantine II of Greece has sold for an incredible €2,070,000 at a recent auction.
One of only 252 Series I and II cars built, the ‘Federweiss’ (white) 1959 507 German Roadster was the top earner at Bonhams Zoute Sale, outselling its closest rival, a 2018 Ford GT Coupé by over a million euros.
The 1950s was a prolific time for designers on both sides of the Atlantic producing some of the all-time greats of automotive styling, including the stunning and now extremely desirable BMW 507. Indeed the marque paid the ultimate homage to its legendary by ‘re-introducing’ the model, albeit in the guise of the Z8.
So popular was the svelte roadster, only the rich and famous could dig deep enough to afford such automotive luxury, with iconic names such as Elvis Presley, movie stars Ursula Andress and Alain Delon, skiing champion Toni Sailer, Prince Rainer of Monaco, and the Aga Khan all being proud custodians at one time or another. Nevertheless, such a limited clientele, however exclusive, could not sustain the 507 in production, which ceased in December 1959 after only 252 cars had been sold.

This particular Series II example was first owned by HRH Prince Constantine II of Greece and wore the number plate ’36’. When owned by the Prince, the car was fitted with a Nardi steering wheel and a Becker Mexico Radio with an automatic antenna.
The current owner bought the ‘tired’ BMW in Greece in 1989, adamant it would be given a full restoration in due course. A certain Munich based Mr Brummer in Munich, who was a BMW V8 guru and 507 specialists, was to be the chosen restorer and carried out the ‘ground-up’ restoration to the highest standard at a price of 300,000 DM over a three-year time frame.
During the process, the colour scheme was changed from dark silver to the original 507 colours of ‘Federweiss’ (white) with a dark blue leather interior and matching soft-top as requested by the current owner.
