The Tipo184, dubbed as the most cost-effective way to feel like Juan Manuel Fangio, will make its debut at The London Classic Car Show 25-27 June at Syon Park…

Fans of the racing legend, Fangio will no doubt remember the Alfa Romeo 158/159, affectionately known as the Alfetta (Little Alfa in Italian) that became one of the most successful racing cars ever to grace any racing circuit, achieving an incredible 47 wins from the 54 Grands Prix they competed in.

Hertfordshire-based Dowsetts Classic Cars will unveil their first-ever Tipo184 as part of this year’s ‘The Evolution of Design’ theme, paying homage to the Alfa Romeo 158, raced by the legendary Argentine racing car driver who dominated the first decade of F1 racing, winning the World Drivers’ Championship five times.

Chassis 0001 is the first of the ‘economical’ self-assembly kits based on the relatively easy-to-source Mazda MX-5 (Miata) Mk 2 running gear. The lightweight ‘sheep in wolf’s’ clothing is the brainchild of ex-Wheeler Dealer and part-owner, Ant Anstead who was so inspired by the Alfa 158 he decided to create his own version from scratch assisted by Darren Collins and brought to reality by a small team of enthusiasts.

Jeremy McNamara, CEO Dowsetts Classic Cars
“We are delighted to unveil chassis 0001 to the world, showing the intensive development work that has been put in since the project was announced late last year. Tipo184 provides those looking to enter into race car ownership with an affordable and fun option. The London Classic Car Show is a fitting event to show a fully built car for the first time and the Dowsetts team is looking forward to the Tipo184 taking its place amongst some of the finest vehicles in motoring history.”

Tipo184 owners will also be able to take part in a new race series, run in partnership with the British Racing & Sports Car Club (BRSCC). Billed as one of the most affordable single-seater race series in the world, the series will start as a UK-based set of track days towards the end of this year before racing starts in 2022. The planned race format for 2022 will consist of a 15-minute qualifying session followed by two 15-minute races at major circuits across the UK. Plans are also in progress for race series in Europe and the US.

Can it be used on a road?
While the Tipo184 is primarily a track car, Dowsetts Cars say there is no reason why (in most countries) it cannot be used on the road with some modifications… adding ‘IVA (Individual Vehicle Approval) is possible and we will support the builder wishing to get IVA compliance with a “Tipo Road Kit” at a later date.
